The surviving members of Monty Python finally faced their public yesterday as the first night of their farewell reunion, Live (mostly) premiered at the O2 in London.

Cineworld audiences will be able to watch the 20th July performance live as we broadcast the final ever Monty Python show in super-sharp HD in cinemas across the UK.

So, the first night’s done, and the reviews are in. And apart from a few grumpychop write-ups, it appears the return of the septuagenarian comedy stars has gone down well. Here are a few of the things the critics are saying about the premiere performance of Monty Python: Live (mostly):

“As a fan, I have to admit to a twinge of awe and even an uncool microsecond of lachrymose emotion at seeing them together again – looking old, as old as the Four Yorkshiremen were supposed to be when they originally did the sketch as young men.” The Guardian

“The Pythons came, they doddered, but they conquered. What they lack in sprightliness is compensated for by the choreographed frolics of a troupe of 20 performers young enough to be their grandchildren.” The Telegraph

“No matter how jaded or cynical, the opening to I’m A Lumberjack, Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life, Nudge Nudge Wink Wink and even the Liberty Bell theme tune itself can’t help but send a shiver down the spine of anyone who knows about these things. And has any sketch ever started better than ‘Is this the right room for an argument?’ ‘I told you once...’” Chortle

“Unsurprisingly it is the Dead Parrot sketch that gets huge laughs. And Michael Palin and John Cleese who star in it and try not to laugh themselves are the biggest stars of the show. With so many well known gags it's the comedy equivalent of seeing the Beatles play a greatest hits gig.” The Mirror
