National Theatre At Home: introducing Barber Shop Chronicles

Have you heard about National Theatre At Home? It's the brilliant new way of streaming the best live productions into your own front room – entirely for free.

Every Thursday at 7PM UK time, they will be releasing one NT Live title on the National Theatre’s YouTube channel that can be watched for free, on-demand for seven days only.

It's exactly what we all need during this time of stringent, nationwide lockdowns. This week, we're introducing Barber Shop Chronicles, including all the details of where you can stream it.

What is the story of Barber Shop Chronicles?

NT Live streams this dynamic and provocative adaptation of Inua Ellams' blistering stage play, a co-production between Fuel and Leeds Playhouse.

The production takes as its basis the apparently unassuming barber shop, a hub for gossip and conversation the world over. However, the play uses this environment to specifically explore the anxieties and experiences of the global black community, traversing six cities in the course of one day to make a profoundly global statement.

This is a live stream of the July 2018 NT Live production, directed by Bijan Sheibani.

How was Barber Shop Chronicles received?

In their five-star review, The Independent described the production as "joyous" and "life-affirming".

How long is Barber Shop Chronicles available to stream for?

It is available to stream for one week from Thursday the 14th of May.
