Prepare to see a whole new side to scene-stealing comic Awkwafina in tender drama The Farewell. The movie screens in advance for Cineworld Unlimited members on 16th September, having received rave reviews at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.
Ocean's 8 and Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina portrays Billi, a Chinese-born, American-raised woman who is summoned back to her home country. It transpires her beloved grandmother Nai Nai is dying, but since no-one has the heart to tell her, the fractious brood have reunited under the pretence of a family wedding.
Gently balancing comedy and heart-rending emotion, The Farewell is based on the real-life experiences of writer-director Lulu Wang.
Both Wang's incisive direction and Awkwafina's subtle performance have been the recipient of much praise. Peter Travers writes in Rolling Stone: "Extraordinary on every level, Lulu Wang's The Farewell starring an award-calibre Awkwafina builds a funny, touching and vital film about what makes a family in any culture, leaving you with cathartic tears."
