1. The star-crossed romance – If Beale Street Could Talk
Barry Jenkins's adaptation of James Baldwin's novel is an engrossing mix of the poetic and the hard-hitting. Stephan James and KiKi Lane are compelling in this Oscar-nominated story of a young black couple on the verge of welcoming their first child into the world. However, their happiness is threatened by the spectre of jail-time and prejudice coursing throughout 1970s Harlem.
With a powerful supporting performance from an Oscar-nominated Regina King, this is another triumph from the director of Moonlight.

2. The totally awesome sequel – The LEGO Movie 2
Five years ago, The LEGO Movie stole our hearts with its cheekily irreverent CGI animation, not to mention its heartfelt message about the importance of preserving creativity.
The original film's fiendishly witty directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller step into the role of writers and producers for this typically inventive sequel. Chris Pratt's dorky yet endearing 'Master Builder' Emmet is back as we pick up the story in the wake of Taco Tuesday, with the landscape now ravaged by invading LEGO DUPLO figures.
Plus, we get two Chris Pratts for the price of one: he also voices grizzled outer-space adventurer Rex Dangervest.

3. Instant Family
Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne are an endearing pair of hapless prospective parents in this affectionate comedy-drama from Daddy's Home director Sean Anders. The seemingly routine adoption of three children soon leads to all manner of hilarity and poignant revelations in this truthful story of contemporary parenting, which has already proven a hit in the USA.

4. The sweeping sci-fi adventure – Alita: Battle Angel
There's nowhere in the rulebook that says Valentine's Day is reserved strictly for gooey rom-coms. Instead, immerse yourselves in a visually spectacular adaptation of manga series Gunnm, courtesy of writer-producer James Cameron and director Robert Rodriguez.
The creative minds behind Avatar and Sin City collaborate on the story of Alita (Rosa Salazar), an amnesiac cyborg who must unlock the secret of who she once was. Co-starring Christoph Waltz, Mahershala Ali and Jennifer Connelly, Alita: Battle Angel fills the screen with breathtaking imagery.

5. The compelling road-trip drama – Green Book
Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali are a terrific double-act in this Oscar-nominated retelling of a life-changing 1960s road-trip.
Mortensen is uncouth Italian-American driver Tony Lip and Ali is cultured black musician Dr Don Shirley, who embark on a deep south concert tour and learn about one another in the process.

6. The emotional trilogy conclusion – How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
We imagine many of you Valentine's couples will have grown up with the adventures of Viking Hiccup and his dragon friend Toothless. After all, the thrilling How To Train Your Dragon series began in 2010, and if you've been invested throughout the last nine years, it all pays off in this thrilling climax.
With dragons now firmly established in the Viking community of Berk, Hiccup faces his greatest challenge so far in the form of dragon hunter Grimmel (F. Murray Abraham). At the same time, Night Fury breed Toothless meets his other half in the form of a Light Fury, and falls head over tail in love. The stage is set for an exciting and, yes, moving conclusion to a fine trilogy.

7. Melissa McCarthy meets Richard E. Grant – Can You Ever Forgive Me?
If classy, Oscar-nominated drama is more your Valentine's Day bag, don't miss this compelling true story of biographer and forger Lee Israel. It's a film showcasing memorable performances from Spy's Melissa McCarthy and Withnail and I's Richard E. Grant.
Both actors have been recognised by their Oscars for their brilliantly observed turns in director Marielle Heller's atmospheric story of literary deception. Grant has in fact scored his first ever Oscar nomination, a sure sign of the excellent chemistry he shares with a career-best McCarthy.
