Acclaimed French director FranÃ§ois Ozon adapts a Ruth Rendell story in this unsettling drama of secrets and lies. When Laura (Isild Le Besco) tragically passes away, it leaves her childhood best friend Claire (Anais Demoustier) utterly bereft. Expecting that Laura's widowed husband David (Roman Durais) will also have to come to terms with his grief, Claire finds herself increasingly unsettled by his behaviour, and soon makes shocking discoveries about his secretive lifestyle. The New Girlfriend is the latest atmospheric, unnerving project from esteemed French filmmaker Francois Ozon. Adapted from British crime writer Ruth Rendell's short story of the same name, the film had its world premiere at last year's Toronto Film Festival. Ozon's previous movies Swimming Pool and In the House skilfully examined psychological unease and the boundaries between truth and fiction. Demoustier and Durais give acclaimed performances, with Variety describing them as "beautifully controlled".
