Cineworld Barnsley creates a special new documentary to commemorate its opening

You may have heard that Cineworld Barnsley opened with a bang recently. The cinema was delighted to host a special gala celebration at the end of September, which was attended by 700 people – including some rather illustrious Barnsley residents.

The new cinema, located in The Glass Works, features 13 state-of-the-art screens including an IMAX with Laser auditorium, a multi-sensory 4DX extreme cinema experience and ScreenX, which is a 270-degree wrap-around screen that surrounds you in your seat. The cinema also includes an onsite Starbucks on the ground level.

We've put together a new short documentary that champions the opening of the new cinema. More particularly, we asked several local celebrities to chime in and give their view on the latest Cineworld opening.

The luminaries include actor David Bradley, star of Ken Loach's British classic Kes (1969). The movie was shot locally and is considered one of the greatest-ever depictions of working-class British life in the 1960s. Bradley's portrayal of the lonely boy Billy, who bonds with his beloved pet kestrel, remains powerful to this day.

“It’s just what Barnsley needed," Bradley says of Cineworld Barnsley's opening. "I think it looks wonderful... Cineworld has done us proud.”

Another of the celebrities featured in the video is the bestselling author of Chocolat, Joanne Harris. Chocolat was adapted into a successful movie, released in 2000, starring Juliette Binoche and Johnny Depp.

“I think a lot of people after Chocolat expected me to move to London or LA, and I never wanted to," says Harris. "I love Yorkshire, I love the countryside, I love the people.” On the arrival of Cineworld in her hometown, she said “It’s great that there is a Cineworld in Barnsley, I think it's high time there was one. I hope it will attract more people.”

The documentary also features contributions from the noted sculptor Graham Ibbeson and YouTuber Lee Hinchcliffe. Check it out below – it's also shown before every movie screening at Cineworld Barnsley itself.
