It’s August, it’s the middle of the summer holidays, and the weather is… a bit iffy to say the least. There are some real crackers showing at Cineworld over the next few weeks, with everything from ravenous sharks to racing heroes, spooky laughs to sweary pooches coming to the big screen.

Joy Ride (showing now)
Adele Lim’s directorial debut, Joy Ride is a hilarious and shocking comedy-drama about an adopted Asian-American girl (Ashley Park) who, together with her friends, sets out to find her real parents. Along the way, they get into all manner of scrapes, from drug deals to embarrassing social media mishaps.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (showing now)
The latest reboot in the popular comic-book franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is a dazzling computer animation featuring the voices of Seth Rogen, Jackie Chan and Rose Byrne, among others. Jeff Rowe’s all-action blockbuster also introduces a new baddie called Superfly. Go get him, turtles!
Meg 2: The Trench (showing now)
Jason Statham returns as fearless diver Jonas Taylor in this super-sized shark sequel. Directed by Ben Wheatley, Meg 2: The Trench sees our hero up against an even more formidable foe in the shape of the kronosaurus. Can he repeat his incredible feats from the last film?
Talk To Me (showing now)
Directed by twin brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, Talk To Me is one of the most talked-about horror movies of recent years. When a group of friends discover that they can conjure spirits using a mysterious embalmed hand, they take things too far – with devastating consequences.
Barbie (showing now)
The iconic children’s doll finally gets her moment on the silver screen in Greta Gerwig’s wildly colourful comedy. Starring Margot Robbie as the titular heroine, and Ryan Gosling as her trusted sidekick Ken, Barbie is a joyously uplifting experience that might just have you dusting down your childhood figurine.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (showing now)
Tom Cruise’s long-running espionage series returns – and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is every bit as exciting as the previous M:I outings. With Russian submarines, international arms dealers and running battles on the Orient Express, it contains all the ingredients for a breathtaking adventure.
Oppenheimer (showing now)
Christopher Nolan’s biographical thriller tells the story of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), the man who oversaw the production of the first nuclear weapons during World War II. Fascinating and thought-provoking in equal measures, Oppenheimer is Nolan at his blistering best.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (showing now)
The fifth film in the legendary series, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny sees our now-ageing hero battling the Nazis once again. This time, the coveted prize is a dial that can change the course of history. With action and laughs galore, Harrison Ford’s swansong is a worthy addition to the franchise.
Gran Turismo (from August 9)
A Neill Blomkamp-directed sports drama, Gran Turismo tells the true story of Jann Mardenborough, a teenager who, having conquered the Gran Turismo videogame, sets out to replicate his glory on a real-life racing track. Look out for an appearance by Spice Girl Geri Halliwell as Jann’s mother.
Haunted Mansion (from August 11)
The second adaptation of Disney’s popular theme park attraction (following the 2003 Eddie Murphy movie), Justin Simien’s Haunted Mansion features a star-studded cast that includes Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Jamie Lee Curtis and Jared Leto. With ghoulish giggles galore, it’s great fun for older kids and adults alike.
Strays (from August 18)
Taking a detour from the cutesy capers usually seen in dog-related films, Josh Greenbaum’s Strays is an adult-themed comedy that sees Will Ferrell and Jamie Foxx providing the voices for two abandoned dogs who resort to extreme measures to get revenge on a former owner. Rude and crude, it’ll have you in tears of laughter.
Blue Beetle (from August 18)
Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, Blue Beetle stars Xolo Mariduena as a teenage college graduate who gains amazing superpowers when an alien beetle grafts itself onto him. Loaded with action and special effects, it’s sure to capture young imaginations.
The Blackening (from August 23)
Directed by Tim Story, The Blackening is a ground-breaking comedy-horror film that focuses on a group of black teenagers who take a break in a remote woodland cabin, only to find themselves being targeted by a masked invader during Juneteenth. You won’t know whether to laugh or scream!
Theater Camp (from August 25)
Co-directed by newcomers Molly Gordon and Nick Lieberman, Theater Camp is centred around a summer group for thespians that has to come up with an emergency solution after its indomitable founder falls into a coma. Featuring a wonderful cast of youngsters, it’s a heart-warming comedy for the ages.
