While there aren’t as many blockbusters out at the moment, there is a wealth of acclaimed independent movies rising to fill the gap. One of these is Herself, a powerfully acted, astute story of family relationships that lands in Cineworld on 16th October.
Mamma Mia! director Phyllida Lloyd coaxes a memorable star turn from Clare Dunne, who plays struggling single mother Sandra. Determined to give her two young daughters the best possible upbringing, Sandra rallies a collective group of friends and allies to build her dream house. In the process, she defies the efforts of the local council and her violent ex-husband. Check out the trailer below.
Herself is showing as part of the 2020 BFI London Film Festival and was met with critical raves at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Variety's Peter Debruge lauds the film as "[A] timely, empowering story". He also described it as the "standout" film at Sundance 2020. Clare Dunn is the recipient of much praise in Tomris Laffly's review for RogerEbert.com: "With her elegant, restrained and quietly devastating performance as a headstrong yet financially struggling single-mother of two young girls, Clare Dunne is a revelation [in Herself]."
Herself is released on 16th October so tweet us @Cineworld if you're planning to watch it.
