You've heard the name, you've seen the trailers, and now the wait is finally over – Sinners explodes onto the big screen at Cineworld from Friday April 18th. Everyone's been talking about Ryan Coogler's new supernatural horror movie: how it was shot in the spectacular IMAX format, how it's set in the American Deep South of the 1930s, how Creed actor Michael B. Jordan plays twin brothers who return to their hometown to escape their troubles, and – most importantly – how it contains lots of bloodthirsty vampires!
But what have critics made of this long-awaited new movie? Here, we've rounded up some of the best comments from reviewers across the globe...
Cineworld is showing Sinners in IMAX / IMAX 3D, 4DX, ScreenX, Superscreen, as well as standard 2D. To book your tickets, scroll to the bottom of the page.
David Gonzalez of The Cinematic Reel was so impressed with the movie, he claimed it'll go down as one of the year's best. "Powered by its grand IMAX scope, the film unleashes a visual intensity as it manoeuvres through its layered themes while embracing its magnetic music, sex appeal and ultra-violent madness," he wrote. "Sinners is sure to take a bite out of every 'Best of 2025' list."
Zach Pope of Zach Pope Reviews went one step further, claiming that Sinners is among the best of the 2020s... "An unforgettable cinematic odyssey!" he said on his YouTube channel. "An experience that demands to be felt on the big screen. Mesmerising, intense and electrifying, this is Ryan Coogler’s true masterpiece. One of the decade’s finest, and a film that will leave you absolutely speechless."
Ryan Coogler was singled out for praise by Charlie Ridgely of ComicBook.com, who wrote: "The director behind Creed and Black Panther is who we thought he was and so much more. His new movie, Sinners, is the kind of blockbuster masterpiece that seems to come along only once every few years."
Meanwhile, Grace Randolph of Beyond the Trailer credited both the filmmaker and his leading man for delivering such a powerful movie. She said on her YouTube channel: "Once again, Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan prove to be one of the great director-actor partnerships in Hollywood. Sinners is a surprisingly deep and thoughtful film in genre wrapping, which will hopefully broaden its audience. Very compelling."
That sentiment seemed to be shared by Chris Joyce of YouTube channel Movies and Munchies. He said of the film: "Ryan Coogler presents a striking story of family and devotion while wrapping it in a violent and bloody thrilling horror. Michael B. Jordan is spectacular in his dual roles, showcasing restrained emotion and power, but not without explosive potential."
Empire critic Helen O’Hara praised Sinners for standing out from the crowd, calling it: "A wildly original, defiantly weird and gorgeously made film."
Another reviewer to be impressed by its unconventional approach was The Movie Couple's Wendy Lee Szany, who said on YouTube: "There are so many genres mixed into one film, but it never feels overstuffed or convoluted. Coogler does a beautiful job with his storytelling. Watch this on the biggest screen possible."
And a similar observation was made by Michelle Kisner of The Movie Sleuth, who wrote in her review: "Sinners is a sexy, raw, occasionally funny, visceral gut punch of a flick that masterfully juggles various genres and tones."
Last but certainly not least, Culture Mix writer Carla Hay doffed her cap to the film's underlying message. "Sinners is more than a vampire movie," she pointed out. "It's a sexy, stylish, gritty and gory journey that expertly layers horror with the supernatural power of music and haunting legacies about violent racism."
