Where the Crawdads Sing is the eagerly anticipated movie adaptation of Delia Owens' novel, and the first trailer has arrived.
The bestselling potboiler tells the story of the isolated Kya, a young girl who has grown up ostracized from society in the North Carolina marshes. Her integration into the wider world proves turbulent, and when one of the elder Kya's ex-lovers turns up dead, it sparks a murder investigation that reflects negatively on the so-called 'marsh girl'.
Normal People's breakout star Daisy Edgar-Jones portrays the introverted and mysterious Kya. Is she a murderer, or a tragic figure?
The story's mixture of societal disquiet, engrossing Deep South atmosphere and deadly intrigue is sure to propel the movie to success in much the same way as the book. This will also be the first proper test of Edgar-Jones' star power – she excelled in Normal People as the raw and conflicted Marianne, so the series should provide the ideal test-bed for the character of Kya.
Reese Witherspoon executive produces the movie and it's written by Lucy Alibar who scribed the atmospheric Louisiana-set tale Beasts of the South Wild. The supporting cast includes Joe Alwyn (The Favourite) and Harris Dickinson (The King's Man).
There's clearly an excellent pedigree to do justice to the story, which has itself sold 12 million copies to date. Check out the trailer and get ready for Where the Crawdads Sing on 15th July.
The movie is among our most anticipated drama movie releases of 2022.
