Blitz director Steve McQueen on bringing new perspectives to his World War II drama

Steve McQueen is one of the UK's finest directors, acclaimed for his raw, uncompromising studies of humanity under duress in the likes of Hunger (2008), Shame (2012) and 12 Years a Slave (2013).

For his latest film Blitz, McQueen takes a compassionate look at the UK's darkest hour. The film stars bright young newcomer Elliot Heffernan as George, a kid who is separated from his mother Rita (Saoirse Ronan) amid London's blitzkrieg by the Nazi Luftwaffe.

What then unfolds is both a spirited story of discovery and a piercing interrogation of racial identity carried off in the director's typically incisive style.

We caught up with Steve to discuss the film's production. He explains how he sought to bring fresh perspectives to familiar World War II narratives including the wartime role played by women in the London munitions factories, so check out the interview below.
