Celebrate the release of The Brutalist with our deep dive into Cineworld architecture

The Brutalist has received 10 Oscar nominations and is being tipped as a major contender to sweep the board at this year's Academy Awards. Adrien Brody stars as Laszlo, a Hungarian architect who arrives in America after World War II and plans to sculpt out his destiny by means of brutalist design, no matter the personal cost.

Directed with an epic sweep by Brady Corbet, the movie sprawls to four hours in length (plus a 15-minute intermission, snack fans!) and attains the imposing majesty of the finest building one can think of.

We're marking the release of this acclaimed drama with our deep dive into some notable Cineworld buildings. Our Cineworld sites are defined by their architectural personality, so we're appropriately kicking things off with our brutalist champion: The Barcode in Plymouth.

When was Cineworld Plymouth opened and why was it designed in a brutalist fashion?

The cinema opened in August 2019.

Cineworld Barcode

Dubbed 'The Barcode', the building combines brutalist principles, which started in the UK in the mid-20th century, with contemporary sensibilities. Possessed of a stark, linear façade, the building juxtaposes orderly, repetitious cladding with asymmetry, with the alternating bands of light and dark materials resembling a barcode and acting as an industrial metaphor.

The site's angular protrusions and recessed windows are an explicit reminder of brutalist monoliths elsewhere worldwide. The building has a multi-use design, housing our Cineworld Plymouth cinema, plus retail spaces and eateries, celebrates functionalism, integrating spaces that serve modern leisure and utility.

The building aims to mimic the dynamic expanse of the big-screen experience, offering appeal and intrigue to film fans and architects alike.
