All you Cineworlders have a date with destiny, because now is the time to book your tickets for Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.
This is a critical movie in Marvel's Phase Four development, which started with Black Widow back in July. (Future movies encompass Eternals, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Thor: Love and Thunder.)
In the words of the official synopsis: "Marvel Studios' Shang-Chi and The Legend of The Ten Rings stars Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, who must confront the past he thought he left behind when he is drawn into the web of the mysterious Ten Rings organization."
Shang-Chi is the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie fronted by an actor of Asian heritage. Canadian-Chinese actor and martial artist Simu Liu leads the cast, sparring with veteran Hong Kong performer Tony Leung who plays the fan-favourite Marvel comic book villain The Mandarin. The excellent supporting cast includes Awkwafina (Raya and the Last Dragon) and Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon).
"There are many iterations of Shang-Chi throughout the comics, but there was always a core relationship between him and his father that was extremely complicated — and that was something I really related to," explained director Destin Daniel Cretton, who helmed the acclaimed indie movie Short Term 12. "That was a big part of what I pitched. Using the movie to explore the psychology of a kid who was trained to be a killer when he was young. Now that he has broken out of that, how does he learn to redefine himself in the world and find the balance of what his relationship with his father should be?"
