Nosferatu early reactions: Robert Eggers' new movie is hailed as a Gothic masterpiece

According to the rave early responses, Robert Eggers' vampire chiller Nosferatu, due for release in January, is a feast of erotically charged bloodshed and depravity. Eggers made a name for himself with the lusciously Gothic tales The Witch (2016) and The Lighthouse (2020) before he branched out into brutal Viking lore with The Northman (2022).

Nosferatu is the natural next step for this talented horror filmmaker. It's a remake of the 1922 German Expressionist horror masterpiece, a loose, unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker's 1897 vampire novel Dracula. The original Nosferatu, directed by F.W. Murnau, birthed many of the horror cliches with which we're now familiar from the shadow on the staircase to the unmistakeable, animalistic make-up adorning central actor Max Shreck as Count Orlok.

Eggers' take on the story sees IT actor Bill Skarsgard undergo a terrifying transformation into the bestial Orlok. Lily-Rose Depp plays the unsuspecting Ellen Hutter with whom the vampire becomes infatuated while Nicholas Hoult, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, Emma Corrin, Ralph Ineson and Simon McBurney round out the excellent cast.

Audiences should be prepared to tuck into a darkly baroque tale that combines various elements of Dracula and Nosferatu lore with the exacting, period-authentic atmosphere for which Eggers is so renowned. And it sounds like Depp may be gunning for an Oscar nomination based on her possession sequences alone – check out the responses below.
