Angelina Jolie is being tipped for an Oscar nomination for her breathtaking performance in Maria. The movie screens in advance for Unlimited members in December and you can now book your tickets.
This stirring and emotional biopic sees Jolie transform into the operatic diva Maria Callas, the woman with the voice of an angel who was beset by all manner of personal tragedies.
The movie is directed by noted filmmaker Pablo Larrain who completes his trilogy of films examining female celebrities in the public spotlight. The previous films were the acclaimed Jackie (2016), starring Natalie Portman as Jackie Kennedy, and Spencer (2021), starring Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana.
As with Spencer, Larrain works from a script by screenwriter Steven Knight (best known as the creator of Peaky Blinders.) We can therefore expect Larrain's new film to act as another trenchant study of the battle between public image and private anguish, as Jolie's singing voice meshes with archival recordings of the iconic Callas. The movie is lensed in gorgeously nostalgic hues by cinematographer Edward Lachmann (Far from Heaven) and Jolie's performance has already received acclaim following the film's debut at the Venice Film Festival.
Writing for Little White Lies, Hannah Strong states: "There’s an ethereal quality to Jolie’s performance that matches Callas’ legendary persona, and despite the deep sense of melancholy that pervades the film like a ghostly veil, this is still a love story – and one where the heroine lives forever."
Book your tickets for Maria – it previews for Unlimited members on December 18th.
