Dev Patel directs and stars in the bruising Indian-set revenge thriller Monkey Man. The one-time Skins star portrays Kid, an underground boxer who styles himself after Hanuman the Hindu monkey deity. He's on a course of retribution to avenge his late mother, which results in all manner of face-smashing, limb-shattering action sequences, staged with aplomb by debut director Patel.
Produced by Oscar winner Jordan Peele, Monkey Man absorbs all manner of cultural commentary as Kid is adopted as a folk hero by his fellow slum residents. This helps distinguish the film from its Hollywood brethren as Patel acknowledges his Gujurati Indian background and reinvents the action-thriller to dazzling effect.
The film has already wowed the critics at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival and it's now played in advance for Unlimited members. Here's a selection of ecstatic reactions that should compel you to see Monkey Man at Cineworld from this Friday.
Absolutely epic, Dev Patel proves that he’s one of Britains best talents, a gritty revenge story with frenetic fight scenes that put John Wick to shame, it lost momentum slightly at the start of the second half but that finale made up for it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

an absolute riot - i love the John Wick movies, but #MonkeyMan brought so many new faces and cultures into the action world, and went toe to toe with Rocky for that training montage!a unique take on a genre that keeps reinventing itself, and a mighty calling card for Dev Patel.

What an absolute belter, breathtaking action, brilliant story and vengeance being served. Big Vs small, powerful vs weak. Brilliant story telling, Makes John Wick seem tame. 10/10 and rebooked for next weekend. More please

#MonkeyMan was such an insane film but a great fun, gory action packed movie and story! Dev Patel really killed it with his portrayal of Kid/Monkey Man as well as directing, producing and writing the story. Everyone did amazing in the film! 8.8/10! Grade: A! Well Done Everyone!🐵

Just got back from Cineworld pre-release. What a film. Absolutely superb throughout. The visuals were absolutley on point, Dev Patel looked like he was going to eat a live human throughout the entire film, and the final movement into Indian John Wick was mesmerising.
