Take to the waves this November in the visually dazzling Disney sequel, Moana 2. Prepare to be reunited with the eponymous Polynesian princess (voiced once again by Auliʻi Cravalho) as she sets off on another journey to save her island kingdom and her people, accompanied once again by her demi-god sidekick, Maui (Dwayne Johnson).
The ambition is greater, the scope is wider and the animation is more vibrant than ever in this eagerly anticipated followup. Complete with songs from Bridgerton stage musical legends Barlow and Bear, the movie promises everything for Disney nostalgics and Moana newbies alike.
Here's a recap of the story so far.
MOANA (2016)
- Legend states that thousands of years ago, in ancient Polynesia, the people celebrated the goddess of nature known as Te Fiti
- Te Fiti was embodied as a living island who brought life to the ocean using a sacred stone as her heart and the source of her power
- This object came to be known as 'the heart of Te Fiti'
- However, the demi-god Maui later attempted to steal the stone to give humanity the power of creation
- Te Fiti disintegrated and Maui was later attacked by the volcanic god known as Te Ka
- Maui and his magical fish hook disappeared, along with the heart of Te Fiti
- Many generations later, Moana has grown up as the daughter of chieftain Tui (Temeura Morrison)
- Moana is expressly forbidden to venture beyond the reef but she is compelled by a natural curiosity
- She is then selected by the spirit of the sea to retrieve the heart of Te Fiti and restore harmony to her island, which has been affected by blight
- Without the heart in its proper place, the island of Te Fiti is destroying itself, and it needs to be returned to restore balance to the seas
- Moana's grandmother Tala (Rachel House) then reveals that their ancestors were way finders and were harmonious with the ocean
- Having been given the heart by the ocean, Tala gives it to Moana before later falling gravely ill
- Defying her father's orders, Moana takes to the sea in a raft in a bid to locate Maui, retrieve the heart of Te Fiti and restore it to its natural resting place
- Moana locates the boastful, blithe Maui on a remote island and they reluctantly become partners
- Moana and Maui are later attacked by the Kakamora, a tribe of coconut-bodied creatures, but manage to escape
- Maui retrieves his fishhook in Lalotai, the Realm of Monsters, from Tamatoa (Jemaine Clement), a giant coconut crab (who sings like David Bowie)
- Arriving at Te Fiti's island, Moana refuses to turn back, when an attack by Te Ka results in Maui's hook being damaged
- Enraged, he leaves Moana behind and she implores the ocean to find someone else to restore the heart
- Moana's confidence is later restored when Tala's spirit manifests in front of her
- Moana retrieves the heart, reunites with Maui and sets sail for Te Fiti's island where she discovers that Te Ka is Te Fiti herself, only in a corrupted state
- While Maui battles Te Ka, the ocean clears a path for Moana, allowing her to return the heart to Te Fiti, who heals the ocean
- Maui apologises to Te Fiti and she's restored to her natural island form
- Moana returns home to her parents where she later takes up her role as chief and way finder, leading her people back to sea
MOANA 2 (2024)
- Several years after the events of Moana, our title character has grown up and now has a daughter named Simea
- Moana takes to the open ocean again to break the god Nalo's curse on the hidden island of Motufetu
- Re-teaming with Maui, Moana vows to protect her daughter and her people while confronting a new threat in the form of the underworld goddess Matangi
