The Wild Robot director Chris Sanders on how he crafted an animated classic

Director Chris Sanders knows his way around an animated movie. He received acclaim for co-directing Disney's hand-drawn Lilo & Stitch (2002) and then stepped things up a gear by co-directing the first movie in the sweeping How To Train Your Dragon series (2010).

Sanders goes solo for this month's arrestingly lovely animated adventure The Wild Robot. It's adapted from the first in a series of bestselling novels by Peter Brown, wrapping audiences in the empathetic story of the titular robot Roz (voiced with warmth by Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o).

When Roz is stranded on a remote island, she becomes the unlikely surrogate parent to an orphaned gosling (voiced as an adult by Kit Connor). It's a story that resonates with all manner of elemental truths and Sanders explains all in our behind-the-scenes interview.

Check out the interview below in which Sanders discusses his stylistic influences and casting decisions, all the while putting his sketching skills to the test (trust us, it's truly impressive).

The Wild Robot is on release now and will be playing throughout the October half-term to delight family audiences. Book your tickets below.
