Angelina Jolie is in line for an Oscar nomination for her stirring performance in Maria. She plays the late operatic diva Maria Callas in an emotional biopic that explores Callas' artistic triumphs and agonising personal demons, Jolie's singing voice meshing with archival recordings of the iconic performer.
Pablo Larrain directs the movie and he is renowned for his piercing studies of female celebrities in the public spotlight. Larrain's earlier films include the Jackie Kennedy biopic Jackie (2016), starring Natalie Portman, and the Princess Diana-centric drama Spencer (2021), starring Kristen Stewart.
Larrain's camera absorbs the gilded finery of Maria Callas' life while also showing how her impulses destroyed her, and critics have agreed that Jolie plays the role to the hilt.
The film has now screened in advance for Unlimited members and we've curated several of their responses. Read on to discover why you ought to watch Maria at Cineworld in January.
A fantastic film from. Pablo Larraín. Angelina Jolie gives a career best and carried the film so well that's not a critique just every scene she's in her presence captivates you. a beautiful/heartbreaking film about Maria herself but incredibly shot and gorgeous cinematography

Fourth time I’ve seen it now… and it’s just stunning. Angelina Jolie had better win the Oscar for her performance. Easily my favourite film of the year… and probably next year too

Absolutely stunning film. I knew of Maria Callas as there was an exhibition in the opera House in Venice but the story was beautifully told and Angelina Jolie was absolutely captivating.

Angelina Jolie was great as were the supporting cast. It all looked and sounded great but what did we learn about Callas … not much I feel. Jolie will be Oscar nominated for sure but that doesn’t mean it was a satisfying story.

Very poignant portrayal by Angelina Jolie. I didn't know anything about Maria Callas beforehand. #Maria
